mainSheet

The mainSheet is the Seven Lakes Sailing Club's publication of news, announcements, and related items and is published as needed. Updates are announced and linked in the "Current News" window on the Club's home page. Additionally, postings will be listed "most current first, oldest last". Consequently, the individual item and months will be displayed in reverse order, much like blogs are organized.

The mainSheet is open to all Club members to post announcements, news, for sale or other items of interest to the Club. To do so, you must be registered on the site and request "site permissions" to be an Author on the site. Details on how to post a item are outlined on the FAQ page. If your posting is "time sensitive", please email Kathy Kirst at mainSheet@sail7lakes.com that you have posted an article for the mainSheet.

The meeting was called to order by Commodore Mary Anne Fewkes. An open discussion followed.

First on the agenda was brief discussion on the race courses and race procedures.  The rules have not changed , but more emphasis should be made towards all racing boats identifying themselves with the Committee Boat prior to the race.

Ron Shepard, Vice Commodore, updated the membership on the Wednesday sailing program started last year.  All sailors are invited to be out on Lake Auman each Wedneday afternoon to expand their sailing experience. A new start time of 3:00 PM instead of 4:00 PM was suggested. All further information will be posted on our website.

Bill Mamel spoke about the Sailing School, June 16th - 20th at the Gustafson's cove. Ten members are signed up for the course. There was a concern about new sailors failing to sail after taking the course and how to stimulate more commitment to sailing. A suggestion was made to ask the students if they would prefer sailing with an experienced sailor for a few more times before going on their own.

Ed Silberhorn, Treasurer reported a balance of $2,523.00 in the checking account and $1,100.00 in a roll-over CD.  Seventy (70) members have signed up for the 2008 season while 22 members from last year have yet to rejoin.  Mary Anne will e-mail the list to Barb McElroy who will call as a reminder.  It was decided they would have to pay the late fee of $25.00.

Bob Fewkes commented on possible proposals for 2008. A separate start for larger boats (keel boats) will be considered when 3 or more are racing .  The committee boat would have to make the decision but it was determined further discussion was needed on this matter. Follow-the-Leader style sailing on Wednesday might bring more sailors to join in.  Portmouth handicap changes in regard to the wind speed at the start of the race.  The Committee Boat determines the wind speed and correct handicap. Racing Right-of-Way rules are the same as in the past.  A new set of racing rules will be published by the end of 2008 for years 2009-2012.

Bruce Keyser asked for any new suggestions on socials for the 2008 season. Some suggestions were: Fishing off sailboats (would need a fishing lic.), Visiting Wineries, Visiting sailing boat manufacturers, A road race, Pontoon raft-up only...no scavenger hunt, Another model boat race, Boating gear sale at one of the BYOB's and another water carnival at Johnston Point (must be reserved in advance or during annual picnic)  No decision were made final.  Check the website for more info.

Chuck Ridenour, Race Committee Chairman, asked if Committee Boats and Safety Boats could be reimbursed this year for gas, due to the rise in gas prices.  It was decided reimbursements would be:

$10.00 per race for safety boats

$  5.00 per race for committee boats

The Northside Landowners Assoc. pays for the safety boat,so they would require reimbursement for the committee boat only.  North side and West side would determine payments, preferably minimal checks per season.  Ed Silberhorn will be the contact person for arrangements.

A safety boat sign-up sheet was passed around for the West side.

Barb McElroy reported on the new racing schedule for Lake Sequoia adding two (2) more Sequoia Cup races for a total of 12 races this season.  The committee boat will be run by two different people as in the past and the volunteers will be the same as last year.  The safety boat is operated by the Northside Landowers Assoc.and will be again.

A discussion on the proper execution of the flags at the start of each race was explained as follows:

Exactly 5 minutes before a race......

White flag is displayed for 1 minute and the horn is blown 5 times. After 1 minute...

Blue flag is raised and white flag lowered simultaneously, no horn.  At the end of 4 minutes, exactly...

Red flag is raised, horn blown once.

        Official start of race.

It occurred to me that if we could have a section for Member's sailing adventures, we could, also, have a section linking to Member's websites. I have added a section on the Links page. If you have a website you would like to link, simply "Submit a Link" via the Member's Menu. I will link it as soon as possible.

The McCune Family Website is the first to be linked. Hurry to be the first on your block to have one!

Personal Sailing Adventures
Written by Dan Blue
Wednesday, 19 March 2008 16:07
Paul Kirst has come up with a great idea - Personal Sailing Adventures. I have created a new cateogory called Sailing Adventures. You can post your sailing adventures for the Club's enjoyment. If there is enough interest, I will create a sub-domain where you can create webpages for your adventures.

Also, it was pointed out that Paul had gone on an adventure, rather than a cruise. When asked what the difference was, we were told that an adventure is where you have to do all the work and a cruise is where someone else does the cooking, driving, cleaning, etc. My wife would agree.

The link is on the "public" site. I thought "the world" might be interested, as well. However, if the membership would rather have their adventures available to the Club members only, I will move them to the "Members Only" site. Let me know.

Please understand, Paul and I will be working out the details of how best to upload your stories and photos. As soon as we get them worked out, I'll post an announcement here and details in the FAQ section.

Learn-to-Sail Program
Written by Bill Mamel
Monday, 17 March 2008 14:46
The Seven Lakes Sailing Club is pleased to announce the opening of enrollment for the Learn-to-Sail Program.  All residents of Seven Lakes, minimum age of seventeen (17), are eligible for enrollment.  The program is conducted annually for those persons who
  1. would like to learn the basics of sailing,
  2. wish to improve their current skills and/or
  3. desire to use their sailing skills to race competitively on Lakes Auman or Sequoia.
No previous sailing experience is necessary as instruction will consider the needs and objectives of the individual student.

The program is scheduled to run Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 20, 9AM to noon.  Instruction is conducted in a classroom setting located in a private residence on Lake Auman and, on the water, in sailboats provided by the Club.  Instructors are members of the Seven Lakes Sailing Club.

Contact Bill Mamel (673-8970) or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  if interested in enrolling, or for further information.

Site Update
Written by Dan Blue
Monday, 10 March 2008 12:31
Several new things have been added: a dynamic photo gallery, For Sale and Crew pages, the 1997 and 1996 individual race results, a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, and a number of other small tweaks. I think you will like the new Photo section. When I say it's dynamic, you have to "drive" it to appreciate what I mean. I dug through some old files buried on my computer and found additional photos that I've put online. I will post a comment in the FAQ section about what sizes I need, etc. for photo submissions.

I had a chance to code and load the results from past year's races and needed to develop a format and instructions for the future. Whoever is in charge of keeping the race records will be able to directly upload that information, which should speed the posting process. The FAQ section is self explanatory, but any questons or comments you have would be greatly appreciated. Please send them along.

I have added two sections that may help expand how the site works for you: the For Sale and Crew sections. Currently, they are viewable only in the Member's side of the site. To view them, simply login via the Member's Login. You will be able to directly submit information to either of those pages. Please understand that I am still working on them and still have to "polish" them so they work properly. I should have this completed in a couple of days.

As a general comment, it seems that the membership has responded well to the online Membership Registration/Renewal process. Thank you for your support. Let me say again that if you  have any problems registering or "Creating an Account" or any other difficulty, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can't make the site work for you without your help.

Online Club Membership Registration/Renewal is Live
Written by Dan Blue
Saturday, 01 March 2008 00:00

The Club's Online Membership Registration/Renewal is live! We are asking that all members register or renew their memberships via this method. Doing so will reduce the "paperwork" required and centralize our membership list. We have made every effort to make this process as easy as possible; however, if you have any questions or difficulties, don't hesitate to email me or to call me at 910-690-1179.

Once you have completed the Membership Application/Renewal, take a minute to "Create an Account" under the Member Login on our home page. Having an "member account" on the site offers a number of benefits. For example, we will be able to create one click, broadcast emails to the membership for announcements, changes in events and schedules, etc. Members will be able to directly submit articles and other news items to the site. (Note: All submissions to the site must be approved by Kathy Kirst, the mainSheet Editor, before they are "published" on the site.). Additionally, I plan on adding an "Items For Sale" for boat related items and "Crew List" for members wishing to crew on boats to the site, which would only be viewable to Members with accounts. Club members would have another way to directly email individuals or defined groups of members.

There are probably more benefits that I am not aware of because this is a new system for me, but I will keep you posted via updates in the mainSheet as I uncover them.

The reason for this "two step" process is that the Membership Application/Renewal and Member Accounts on the website are completely separate functions. Neither "talks" to the other. I hope to be able to link them in the future. More to follow; stay tuned.

Site Upgrade - Further Details
Written by Dan Blue
Saturday, 23 February 2008 11:57
I have to have the site up to test some of its functionalities, particularly the Membership Application. I would appreciate it if you didn't venture too far into the site until I've gotten it a bit more polished. I will post announcements regularly to keep you updated on what's going on.

Right now, I am working the bugs out of our Online Membership Application. This should streamline the annual application process and make it easier for you to renew your membership. I will be building the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) as I go along. Please don't hesitate to email me your questions because they will help me build that page.

Site Rennovation and Upgrade
Written by Dan Blue
Thursday, 21 February 2008 21:41

As you can see the site is undergoing a major renovation and upgrade. This "page" is the basic template I'm using but will be modified to our needs. I have already begun much of it on my computer and need only upload it to the site.

I think that you will find the new format will allow for a lot of functionality and usability by the Club and its members. In addition to the ones you will see there are a myriad of others that are available to add. Your input here is invaluable. The Content Management System we are now using is Open Source, which means most of the features available are free. And those I've seen that aren't are very economical. Regardless, CMS offers remarkable flexibility and expansion based on the needs and wants of the organization.

One of those functionalities that I'm particularly excited about is the ability for Club Members to directly input information to the site. More on this later. We will be including a FAQ section that, hopefully, will answer many of your questions. However, if it doesn't, please send your question to me and I will answer it and add it to the FAQ section to help others who might have the same question.

Keep checking back. Changes will be occurring rapidly from this point on. Any input you would like to make would be very welcome at this point.

I hope you like the new look and the new functionality.
